Dementieva Wins Battle of Russians

Towering Russian Elena Dementieva has equalled her previous best Australian Open showing, by advancing to the third round care of a 6-4 6-2 victory over compatriot Anastasia Myskina.

Dementieva, the No.12 seed and top-ranked Russian, took one hour, 14 minutes to triumph on Thursday. The Moscow-based player can count a blistering cross court forehand amongst her weapons, and used it well on the Rebound Ace today, continuously catching her opponent offguard.

Dementieva was outshone in the outright winners department - unleashing 14 to Myskina's 16, but more consistent off the baseline. She next meets the winner of the Magui Serna vs Maria Elena Camerin match.
